Bull Temple is also known as Nandi Temple is one of the oldest temples in Bengaluru. Locals named this temple Dodda Basavana Gudi since it is the biggest temple dedicated to Nandi. Nandi, the mount of shiva and the guardian deity of Lord Shiva's abode hold great importance. Those who visit shiva will make sure to visit Nandi.
History::
A Legend Stories of the Bull Temple::
The area of the temple was agricultural land where rice, peanuts are cultivated by many people. But at the end of the harvesting season, Bull used to rampage through fields damaging the crop and terrifying people. Everyone decided to get rid of the bull and one of them hit the bull on the head. Rather than panicking, It sat down and turned to a statue growing constantly. After hearing the prayers of villagers, Lord Shiva placed a metal plate on the head of the bull ending its growth. By this miracle, people consider the statue as a holy spirit and celebrate a festival.
Lord Ganesha Temple in Premises:: The idol of Ganesha is made out of 110 kgs butter. A new statue is constructed every 4 years. In this period, The butter neither melts nor changes shape. Then this butter is distributed as prasadham for devotees.
Architecture::
The Bull temple was constructed by Kempe Gowda and signifies a Dravidian Architectural style. The entire bull sculpture is carved from a single granite stone forming a 4.5 meters high and 6.5-meter long statue. By applying coconut oil, butter, The grey statue has turned black.
Festivals and Activities::
Kadalekai Parsihe is an honor to the Nandi in the name of a miracle done by Lord Shiva. This is celebrated on the last Monday and Tuesday of Karthikmaasa. The temple is lit with 1,00,000 lamps and decorated. Roads of Bugle Rock and Ramakrishna Mutt fill with joy and happiness. Vendors arrange stalls on the sides selling varieties of groundnuts like salted, fried, sugar-coated, etc. Many toys made out of stone and clay are on sale.
